These days we have so much in the way of stimulation.
Books, social media, YouTube Videos, Netflix, Podcasts, the list goes on.
With all the variety of noise to choose from, we are losing our grip on our inner voice and concentration more everyday.
In this video I’m going to briefly share with you just a few ways to calm your busy mind.
Characteristic Of The Mind
Before I share with you the how to of how to calm your mind, I’m going to describe a characteristic of the mind that is important to understand.
Your mind is like a car speeding down the highway at 100 miles per hour.
Like the car, your mind has inertia which is a property of matter. The denser an object is the more inertia it tends to have.
So you can understand why an over thinker has issues with slowing down their mind.
I want to add that in this era of technology such as social media, we have the special plight of having our concentration fragmented by unlimited content.
A 1 minute video here, a 15 second video there, scrolling through an endless timeline is a recipe for scatter brains.
With all of these odds stacked against us, how do we slow our busy minds?
Developing Concentration Through Single Pointed Attention
Single pointed attention is the key to slowing down your mind or…what seems to be you slowing down your mind.
One single pointed technique is simply paying attention to your breath. You can use techniques such as box breathing which has a cadence of 4 second inhale, 4 second hold, 4 second exhale, 4 second hold.
When you attempt to slow down your mind by way of breathing, you will notice a sudden influx of thoughts which seemingly come rushing at “you.”
This is the inertia of your mind at work.
Your mind, and everything in it, comes flying at you in a similar manner to the objects in a car that comes to a sudden halt on a highway.
What is actually happening is you, the observer, are becoming dis-identified with your thoughts.
The stream is no longer “you.” And you are watching it flow at this point.
When you practice this single pointedness by way of meditation regularly, you will soon realize that you are not liable to be a slave to your mind any longer.
You can now sit and watch these thoughts do their thing without “you” being carried away by them.
So let’s start with 5 minutes per session, 2 sessions a day and let’s see what happens.
A Clean And Organized Environment
A well ordered environment leads to a calm mind.
Be sure to keep your living space, your car, your book bag and everything else relatively clean and well structured.
As above so below and how your environment looks on the outside is how you feel on the inside.
By increasing your conscientiousness through organization and cleaning, you start to bring balance to sub clinical neuroticism.
Shifting to a more detail oriented state is a great way to calm your mind and boost your overall well being in the long run.
Whether you are lifting heavy weight or taking long, 5 mile runs, exercising is a great way to bring calm and mental clarity to your being.
Many a times I have engaged in intense weight lifting sessions that have completely obliterated any anxiety I had.
Find a exercise genre and routine you like.
This is important when it comes to adhering and staying consistent.
Stick with it for awhile and I promise you will bring calm to your busy mind, even if it’s temporarily.
